VNSG – Dutch User Group Conference 2012 – Maastricht, the Netherlands

A very exiting first day at the Dutch User Group Conference in Maastricht ! It is a mix of interesting key notes, lots of parallel sessions, in depth workshops and an informal booth.

Follow #GRCIntegrc for regular updates throughout VNSG2012.

The conference was opened by Tonnie van de Horst (Chairman VNSG) and Angélique de Vries (Managing Director SAP Netherlands). Both explained their mutual interest in a close cooperation between the User Group and SAP. SAP is celebrating its 40 anniversary this year and the VNSG is almost 25 years old, being one of the first SAP User Groups in the world. Congratulations!

Jim Hagemann Snabe (co-CEO SAP AG) brought a clear message in his keynote: SAP will focus on five market categories, all support by HANA, the in-memory technology:

  • Mobile
  • Cloud
  • Analytics
  • Applications
  • Database & Technology

Interesting quote from Jim: “SAP wants to become Apple simple and Googlefast”!

In the area of GRC there was an interesting presentation from Mammoet, telling about their experiences with implementing SAP GRC Access Control v10.0.

SAP GRC 10.0 workshops

Customers who really wanted to see and ‘feel’ the GRC 10.0 system, could visit the Integrc workshops on SAP GRC Process Control. These workshops have been a great success: the second workshop was even ‘overbooked’!

It appeared that many customers really liked to have the opportunity to not only learn about Process Control, but also actually use this system themselves! Today workshops on GRC Access Control have been planned and it looks that many people will attend again.

If you want to speak to us, find us at stand #15!

Integrc on Television

Integrc has been featured by RTL, Europe’s largest TV, radio and production company, in a programme being shown on the Dutch network business channel from the start of March. The short programme, featuring Unilever, looks at how Integrc has used SAP GRC to bring control automation and control testing to help one of the world’s largest companies maintain its success.

Werner van Haelst, joint Managing Director, explains the rationale behind the merger that created Integrc, and how the Governance, Risk Management and Compliance industry continues to change. He also covers the pressures to stay on top, and how Integrc supports companies like Unilever who are striving to push boundaries.

Michael Koler from Unilever Europe explains how Unilever aspires to have effective controls designed and to become one of the leading users of automation. The corporate aim is to drive towards robust processes that never fail – that means having controls in place that prevent issues. The challenge is how to have those controls working and tested more often, while not slowing or constraining operations or adding to the administrative load – and that is where SAP GRC, implemented by Integrc, really has a role to play.

RTL Business channel is a business programme broadcast weekly. Please tune in to watch or use this link (outside the UK) http://bit.ly/yJoeJQ

KPMG: “A Global survey into the integration of GRC”

Norman Marks, SAP VP and OCEF Fellow, reviews KPMG’s recent report, highlights of which are below: we hope these will entice you to read Norman’s full article:-

“KPMG has released ‘The Convergence Evolution’, subtitled ‘Global survey into the integration of governance, risk and compliance’. As explained in the document, KPMG engaged the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) “to conduct a global survey that would assess the extent to which companies are adopting a coordinated approach to their governance, risk and compliance (GRC) activities.”

  • “Before the [financial] crisis, 10 percent of respondents took GRC extremely seriously. Today, this proportion has risen to about 40 percent.
  • “Although many respondents recognize the benefits of improved convergence, only 49 percent label it a priority for their organization. Most are still at a fairly early stage of maturity in their convergence activities.
  • “Inefficiency is another common problem, with 41 percent rating themselves as effective at minimizing duplication of effort.
  • “A lack of coordination among GRC activities means that many companies find it difficult to build risk awareness across the organization and to ensure that the Board receives accurate, up-to-date risk information.
  • “Despite admitting significant weaknesses in their current approach, many companies struggle to build a business case for improving the co-ordination between their GRC activities. Almost two-thirds of respondents consider GRC convergence as a cost, rather than an investment.”

CSI and su53 merge to form new market leading GRC specialist, Integrc (in-teg-ri-see)

CSI Netherlands BV and su53 Solutions Ltd today joined forces to become Integrc, thus creating the largest independent GRC (Governance, Risk & Compliance) consulting firm for SAP clients in the world.

The company is privately owned equally by the shareholders of CSI and of su53, and all staff and assets are now integrated as part of one new company. Integrc’s holding company is based in Den Bosch in the Netherlands, whilst its operating companies remain in the UK and the Netherlands. Operating bases are in the UK (Belfast, Birmingham, London), the Netherlands (Den Bosch), and a new base is formed for Asia Pacific in Singapore.

Integrc appoints joint Managing Directors Martyn Proctor and Werner van Haelst to lead the newly merged business.

At the launch, Martyn Proctor explained the logic of the merger: “Our two companies have worked together for 3 years and increasingly saw how the similarity in cultures meant that combining our innovation, expertise and capability would enable us to extend and improve the services we provide to our clients, and make us a stronger business”.

Joint MD Werner van Haelst continues: “Being similar but able to cover wider geographies is just part of the rationale – even more valuable is the growth in capability we now have: we are bringing su53’s SAP GRC and technology expertise, innovation such as dashboards, its Support Centre and SAP relationship together with CSI’s project leadership in SAP security & control projects, training services, and deep understanding of auditing, to build on both of our core competencies”.

The plans, strategy and incorporation of Integrc result from significant assessment and innovative thinking over the last six months, and the company is fully in place and operational from day one: client, partner and analyst briefings are being conducted through January and February, and Integrc’s launch exhibition will be the global GRC2012 event in March in Las Vegas.

CSI Netherlands BV

CSI Netherlands was founded in 1997 with a focus on SAP audit, security and control and distribution of market leading CSI tools to help manage security in an SAP environment. For many years these tools dominated the market.

By 2007, the CSI software business was re-branded into CSI Tools and separated totally from CSI’s consulting business. From that moment onwards CSI consulting, who had built up a strong reputation, elected to focus increasingly on SAP’s rapidly strengthening GRC portfolio. By the time of the merger with su53, CSI Netherlands was entirely separate from CSI Tools, and had relinquished its status as an agent.

su53 Solutions Ltd

su53 was founded in the UK in 2006 and has grown at an average of 50% per annum to become a major provider in the GRC and SAP security market. Within three years su53 had established itself as the UK’s leading independent specialist for SAP security and controls, becoming SAP’s first accredited GRC Special Expertise Partner. In 2009 su53 set up its innovative Support Service Centre in Northern Ireland: su53 also has operating centres in London and Birmingham.

What is GRC?

(with thanks to Norman Marks, SAP GRC VP- http://normanmarks.wordpress.com)

GRC is how the various parts of the organisation work together, in an orchestrated fashion, to deliver value and optimize performance, through the management of risk and uncertainty, while remaining in compliance.

Some useful concepts here:-

  • GRC is about the whole, not the parts – not even the sum of the parts! It’s about how they work together to achieve organistional success, which may involve sub-optimising individual pieces so that the whole is optimised.
  • GRC is a perspective, a way of looking at the organisation and identifying issues around silos, fragmentation, poor information, and a failure to collaborate.
  • GRC is a capability set. In essence it enables an organisation to establish and strive towards its objectives while staying within established legal and voluntary boundaries.
  • Being ethical is doing the right thing for the right reason even when no one is watching.
  • Governance Risk and Control is the new “Mantra” for the business and economic environment. Repeated corporate failures, frauds, accounting irregularities are all a result of inadequate governance, risk and control mechanisms. All global economies both in the east and west are suffering from this inadequacy. But the fundamental and root cause of all these is basic human greed! So besides GRC we also need to have personal integrity and honesty and discipline which are fundamental traits of good citizens of society. Society and Culture determines these values, and I do believe that economic growth and opportunities have eroded social and human values too. Everybody needs to do some introspection and decide what one wants from life. Time for a revolution in thinking!
  • What I tell organisations is that they have GRC whether they like it or not. GRC is part of business.
  • From a simple definition, to me good GRC is about INTEGRITY. The organisation has made statements and commitments to how it is governed, complies with laws, and manages risks. There are contractual obligations, corporate social responsibility statements, etc. Good GRC is about making sure that the organisation has integrity – that what it has committed to in reports, policies, contracts, and commitments is a reality in the organisation and we can measure and model it.

Governance = Right people taking the Right decisions

Risk Management = Informing the Right people what are the Best Options

Compliance = Informing the Right people that they took the Correct decision
